Yard of The Month

Yard of the Month:

AUGUST 2007

Shelly Mason

We decided to do the yard to help with our home's drainage after the March floods in 2005.  When choosing plants we closely worked with Brumley Gardens to choose ones that would do well year round, be able to flourish in the shade of our large trees and closer to the house we chose plants that are known for helping with eroision.  Some of the varieties include Podocarpus (Japanese Yew), Oak Leaf Hydrangeas, Mahonia (Oregon Grape) , Variegated Pittosporum , Spring Bouquet Viburnum , Japanese Aralia , Holly Fern ,Southern Wood Fern , Moneywort , Dwarf Barberry.  We put in channel drains, a drain back to the creek for excess water, river rock and flagstone in the front of the house and between us and our neighbors.  We installed drip lines to all of our containers and hanging elements to be more efficient in our water consumption.  In the back we moved plants that had been in the front to hide our a/c unit and to ad some flow and movement to the backyard and enlarged our living space.  Lights were installed in the front yard high up in the trees for a moonlight effect and low lights to highlight the two new trees.  Fall and Spring color are added seasonally in reds, oranges and lime greens.
