Guide to Code Enforcement
Residents: this is a summarized guide of important City of Dallas codes for your review and use. Thank you for keeping our neighborhood clean and free of code violations.
Code Compliance

Litter and weeds: Homeowners or tenants are responsible for keeping their lawns mowed, clippings mulched or cleared and the property free of litter. The property must be maintained between the curb in front of the house to the middle of the alley or back property line. Weeds or grass more than 12 inches high is a violation of a City Code subject to a court citation and/or bill for lawn mowing.

Obstructions

The occupant or owner is responsible for keeping street, alley, sidewalk and public grounds clear of obstruction. This includes the trimming of trees and shrubbery which may obstruct an alley or sidewalk.

Open Storage

Any item that is not customarily used or stored outside or is not made of material that is resistant to deterioration from exposure to the outdoors cannot be placed outdoors for more than 24 continuous hours. Exceptions include motor vehicles on improved surfaces, lawn furniture and landscaping items.

Open and Vacant Structure

An owner shall keep the doors and windows of a vacant structure securely closed to prevent unauthorized entry. The city will secure the structure at the owner's expense if the owner does not secure the structure.

Garage Sales

The City of Dallas permits two garage sales a year per property. The sale must last no longer than three days and a person cannot sell merchandise acquired solely for resale.

Junked Motor Vehicle

Motor vehicles that are inoperative and partially dismantled and have expired license tags or stickers are considered "junk motor vehicles". These vehicles are in violation of City Code and may be ticketed, or in cases of noncompliance, they may be towed and sold for salvage.

Zoning

If you have a home occupation in a residentially zoned area, you may not employ more than two persons other than the occupants of the residence; you may not advertise, use a sign or generate loud noise or excessive traffic that interferes with the public peace and comfort.

Substandard Structure

Report any building violation such as peeling paint, leaking roof, electrical and plumbing problems or decayed wood.

Signs

It is a violation of City Code to post any signs on a utility pole, tree or in a City right-of-way.
